L.I.S.G. PRE-K
a program for gifted 4 year olds

preparing children for kindergarten and beyond
The Long Island School for the Gifted Pre-Kindergarten Program has been established to provide an appropriate education for gifted pre-school children in a nurturing environment where they will be both intellectually challenged and comfortable socially, thereby building a solid foundation of basic skills which will enable them to grow and develop to their potential.
Gifted children view learning as fun. They have the ability to learn new information quickly and on a level more advanced than their chronological peers. Based on the L.I.S.G. model, our Pre-K is open to four year old gifted children (by December 31), who demonstrate high intellectual ability, measured by an individually administered IQ test.
Research has proven that excellent early learning opportunities are the foundation for success throughout the elementary school years. Our Pre-K program includes a complex accelerated curriculum with instructional practices that foster a love of learning and nurture an inquisitive mind. Literacy and numeracy are emphasized along with language and higher level thinking and reasoning development.
Opportunities for the development of intellectual growth, self esteem, as well as social and emotional skills are provided in small classes of twelve children with one teacher and an aide. Activities incorporate fine and gross motor skills, music and movement, nature and science, art, dramatic play and the use of computers.
A combination of direct and individual instruction, free play, group time and physical activity are utilized to meet the many needs of the whole gifted child. A fun, supportive, safe and engaging environment promotes meaningful learning and wonderful development in these children.
The Pre-K Program utilizes all of the L.I.S.G. facilities and members of our faculty. In addition, the Pre-K children are able to participate in appropriate special programs and assemblies. The hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Snack and time for lunch and rest are included in the school day. We follow the L.I.S.G. calendar. Tuition for the 2007-08 school year is $10,500.00 with several payment options available. For information on testing and the application process, please call the admissions office at (631) 423-3557.
